How to Choose the Topwater Lures?

If you want to have a trip of topwater bass fishing, the most important thing is to choose the right topwater lures. There are many kinds of topwater fishing lures in the tackles store, so it is very difficult to simplify your selection process. If you don’t want our effort in vain, you’d better consider the advices of the experienced people.

We usually divide the topwater lures into following types: walkers, poppers, wakebaits, minnows baits, prop baits, buzzbaits and frogs. Different types are suitable for different conditions, today we will talk about the topwater walking and topwater popper, and they are the most common lures people use in the topwater fishing.

1.   The walkers of topwater fishing
Topwater walking baits have a slender baitfish profile, and move in a sashaying, “back and forth” action referred to as “walking the dog.” They create a tremendous surface commotion, and draw interest from bass at a great distance. For that reason, they are ideal when you’re fishing in open water areas, and any time you need to cover water to locate feeding bass. They are also ideal for targeting schooling bass, as they can be cast a mile and fly straight every time.

As we have said before, different types are suitable for different conditions. You can use a walker under the following conditions:

1)   When the bass you fish are big: Walking topwaters are very effective
when you catch the big bass, because they are the great bait for big bass.

2)   When the water is calm: Walking baits are best in slick or slightly rippled
water. Big noise will spook the fish in the calm water, walking topwaters usually have a more subtle, gliding action and can make less noise.

3)   Schooling bass: When you see bass schooling in open water and blowing
up everywhere, you need to have a walking bait in your hand.  They cast so much better than others, so you can reach fish 40 yards away from you. They also emulate a fleeing shad very well, which triggers a schooling bass’ instinct to attack.

2.  The Popper of topwater fishing
Topwater poppers feature a flat or concave face, and a baitfish profile. By twitching and jerking the rod, these topwater baits create a splash and popping sound that drives bass crazy. Because they are most effective when worked relatively slowly, poppers are ideal for target fishing in shallow water. They can also be casted very accurately, which means they are easy to place gently next to a stump, laydown, or grass line.
poppers

The appropriate scenarios of using a popper are:

1)   When you want to catch the bass for numbers: Topwater poppers will
catch a lot of bass in the fall when other presentations fall short, you’ll still catch a big one every now and then, but it’s a great option for filling your limit.

2)   When the water is choppy: In the windy days, the water is choppy, and it
you still use thewalking topwaters, it will be hard for the bass to see the lures . Poppers can help the bass know exactly where the lure is.

3)   When the water temperature is decreased: When the water temperatures
dip down into the low 60s or high 50s, it’s hard to beat a popper. The bass aren’t as active in this temperature range, so a slow presentation is essential. You have to be patient because some of your best bites will come on a long pause.

Here are the main difference between the walking topwaters and poppers, and I think you’d better prepare both of them at home, and experience the different styles of topwater fishing.

What Do You Know about Topwater Bass Fishing?

People who like bass fishing often regard the top water bass fishing as the most visual and powerful kind of fishing. This kind of fishing uses the top water fishing lures (which can float above the surface of the shallow water) to catch the fish.

 1. Why should we use the top water fishing lures?
A Topwater fishing lure is a type of fishing lure, usually floating, that may be moved about the surface of water and fish come up from underneath and do their best to give you a heart attack! That’s often because fish hitting a topwater are doing more than just picking up dinner, they’re trying to kill that bug, frog, rodent or fish that’s struggling on top.

2. The steps before topwater bass fishing
Check the weather: In my opinion, no matter what kind of outdoor activity you want to join, the first thing is checking the weather. And the weather condition can often affect the result of the fishing.
Choose the topwater fishing lures: This is the most important part, if you can’t choose an appropriate fishing lure, it will be hard to catch any fish. The most common topwater fishing lures are: Poppers, Buzzbaits and Surface lures. You can see many articles about how to choose the best topwater lures on the internet.

 3. The skills of topwater fishing
With more and more people develop an interest in topwater bass fishing, they begin to share their experiences with others, and we have summarized some useful tips for you.

1)Choose the appropriable time: Topwater fishing is best during the post-spawn, late spring season and into the fall months. After spawning, the fish are sluggish, starving and looking for food. In the summer time, the bass' metabolism has kicked into high gear and will provide a fun retrieval challenge. In autumn, the water temperatures are still warm enough to keep the bass biting.

2)Choose other suitable fishing tackles: Use high-quality fishing hooks on all of your baits. Chemically sharpened is the way to go. And remember that super fishing line and topwaters make an excellent team. These no stretch lines allow for easier hook sets, especially on long casts.

3)Know all kinds of fishing lures well: Learn to proficiently use all types of topwater lures. This will allow you to cover all of the bases when out on the water.

4)Shake your tail feather: Why fish can be attracted by the topwater lures? Because they look like alive. How to make your fishing lures look like alive? It depends on how people move them. Many topwater lures today come out of the package with tail feathers on them. The draw is that while your bait is sitting motionless on the surface, the feather or dressing is moving ever so slightly from the current in the water from wind and waves. It lets the fish know it’s alive.

5)Pay attention to the hook: One of the biggest challenges anglers face in top water fishing is the hook. The excitement of seeing the bass about to bite will cause many to jump the gun. Once you feel the bass on your line, take a deep breath and wait until you feel the pull of its weight. Snap your wrist to set the hook, and then reel your fish in!

Topwater bass fishing is not only fun but can yield decent catch numbers. Whether in a boat or onshore, top water fishing is both challenging and fun. I hope you can enjoy it.

How to Catch Carp?

Carp is a term used for several types of fish that are in the Cyprindae family. It is a kind of freshwater fish which is native to Asia and Europe but has been imported to many other countries with mixed results. More and more anglers develop an interest in carp because they are widespread and can tolerate a variety of water conditions. Though the carp is not the best for eating, but this muscular fish puts up a good fight and can be great for testing out or teaching new fishing techniques.
Carp fishing

1.Suggested fishing tackles
  • Fishing rod: Choose a composite, carbon fiber, or e-glass fishing rod.
  • Fishing baits: Obtain sweet corn or boilies (Boilies are fishing bait made of fish or milk proteins, eggs, and grains, and are an alternative to corn.) for bait.
  • Fishing line: Get a strong monofilament or braided line.
  • Fishing hook: Purchase barbed hooks to keep the fish on the line (Make sure to check that barbed hooks are legal where you are fishing, as they are restricted in some fishing areas).
Carp fishing tackles

2.How to catch the carp
Compared with catching other fish, the biggest difference when catching the carp is you need chum the sweet corn on top of your fishing spot. Then we will mainly discuss the skills of catch the carp.
  •    The suitable spot of catching carp: Carp will feed on nearby vegetation and the insects and other animals that feed on it as well. These are ideal areas to set up when fishing for carp. Carp prefer shallow water during hot weather and deeper water during cold weather.
  •    The keen early morning arrivals have come and gone. Although you’ve probably got to be off by dark, those last three hours can be a great time for a bite or two as the fish can really turn on. You can end up with the fishery to yourself. If you can get a half-day or ‘cheaper’ evening ticket, even better.
  •     Add plenty of salt to particle baits, especially the cooked types like hemp, maize, tares, beans, partiblend seeds, maple peas and chick peas. Carp love the taste of salty foods. As a rough guide, add one tablespoon of salt to 5-litre dry particles. These are also good cheap baits to use!
  •    When the water is cold such as in the winter, try casting your rigs a little more frequently, and target different areas in order to place the hook bait close to the fish. Cold water slows down the movements of carp so there's less chance the fish will swim towards your bait. In the summer, you can lay traps in possible patrolling areas and wait for the carp to find the bait.
  •    It goes without saying that on such intimate venues and fishing just over the stalks' that bankside noise needs to be kept to a minimum. Try and lower or swing baits into position, don’t cast.
  •    If you're fishing the new water, try using brightly colored bait with high attract smells. Only switch if you know there are carp in the swim and you are having no action.
  •    If you can, try to locate the fish before choosing a peg. Locating the carp, or any possible patrolling area is a largest part of carp fishing success. And please remember it that do not always follow the wind for locating carp. Smaller waters are less affected by winds. Also, some of the bigger carp in larger waters may NOT follow the wind because angling pressure has taught them it could be dangerous!
That’s what I can tell you, and you put them into the practice, you can learn more.

How to Use a Fishing Swivel?

The details determine success or failure, and this rule can be applied to fishing. Sometimes people think that the details are not important at all when fishing, but these details may finally determine the result of your fishing trip. For example, many fishermen don’t care about the fishing swivel, but if you pay more attention to use it appropriately, you will get an unexpected result.

fishing swivels
Many people may say that fishing swivel is just a small device consisting of two rings connected to a pivoting joint, it is not necessary to pay much attention to it. And some people even don’t know how to use it. Today, we will talk about how to use the fishing swivel.

1.How to choose a fishing swivel?
There are 2 kinds of common swivels: ball-bearing swivels & barrel swivels:
Barrel swivels are probably the most popular form due to their low cost and wide range of
sizes that cover seemingly all of the fishing needs. However, their biggest disadvantage is their inconsistency and inability to turn when put under tremendous pressure.

barrel swivels
Ball-bearing swivels contain polished stainless-steel ball bearings positioned between its spindle and body. This enables the swivel to rotate freely, negating any twist, even under heavy load. When you're targeting truly big game saltwater species with trolling applications, a stainless steel ball bearing swivel is the only way to go. The perceived disadvantage of ball-bearing swivels is their price.

 ball-bearing swivels

And here is a skill for you to choose the size of the fishing swivel: Choose the smallest swivel possible for the species you are targeting. For example, if you are fishing for muskies, which are among the largest fish in freshwater, use a size 5 swivel.

2.How to tie a swivel to the fishing line?
After buying the appropriate fishing swivel, the next thing is putting it on the fishing line. I can tell you an easy way to tie the swivel to the fishing line, and it is called offshore swivel knot.
Form a loop at the end of the line and tie it off with a spider hitch knot. To make a spider hitch, double the line, form a loop and hold it with your thumb and forefinger. Wrap the doubled line around your thumb five or six times -- up to 15 times for braided line. Pass the loop through the eye of the swivel. Bring the end of the loop back past the eye of the swivel and hold it against the doubled line.

3.When should swivels be used and not used ?
Fishing swivels are not suitable for every condition, if you want to use a fishing swivel, you’d better know whether or not the swivel applies to your condition.
According to some experienced people, when using a casting lure that is prone to twist during the retrieve, or when trolling live/dead baits that are likely to twist, use fishing swivel can be helpful.
Swivels should not be used when fishing in still water, when the fish are aggressive, or as a direct connection to a hook or lure.

Fishing is easy if you only want to relax yourself and enjoy the holiday. But it is complicated if you want to learn it well, because there are too many details you have to care about. What I want to say is that no matter you want to relax yourself or catch more fish, pay attention to the details will help you more enjoy fishing.

How Does Lure’s Color Affect the Bass Fishing?

When we get into a fishing tackles store, we will see many kinds of fishing lures than you think. It is hard to count how many colors do they have, and it is impossible to buy all of them. But what exists is reasonable, what we should do is not know all the colors, but choose the most suitable color for ourselves.
fishing lures

In my opinion, though the colors are various, we can divide them into 5 classes: green, black, orange, white and brown. Now let’s analyze them one by one.
1. The green lures
Most green lures’ colors are close to the natural color, such as watermelon green and pumpkin green. Most jigs, bottom lures are usually green. Have you ever see the little fish which live in the aquatic plant? For most them, the body will be a little green. In fact, the color of a creature’s body will close to the color of the living environment.

2. The black lures
The black here means all the dark color. When people fish at night or in the cloudy day, they will prefer to use the black lures. Besides, black lures are also powerful when the water is muddy. It is because that the fish are always moveing toward the sun, the black lures look like the shadow, so they are more attractive to the fish, especially when the lures are topwater lures.

3. The orange lures
What do you think of when you see the orange lures? Well, I will think of crayfish, many people will use the crayfish as the bait when fishing, so we can see that orange lures are attractive to some fish. According to my experiences, the orange lures are very useful when you want to catch the bass.

4. The white lures
White lures include pink, yellow and fluorescent green, it is a good choice when you need the lures keep moving in the top of water. Because when white lures moving in the topwater, they look like alive, and the fish’s first reaction is to catch them, then you can have a bite in your line.

5. The brown lures
The lures which are going to attract the fish in the bottom water can be made in brown, such as artificial crayfish and worms.

Though it is important to choose the right color, but I have to say that the color is not the most important factor when choosing the fishing lures. Before deciding the color of the lures, you’d better pay more attention to the fishing lures’ action and size. If the action and the size are wrong, it will be hard to catch any fish even you choose a right color.
