How to Catch Bass in Winter with Different Lures?

With the coming of winter, bass fishing becomes more and more difficult. A common problem for all bass fishing anglers is how to choose the right fishing lures. As we all know, fish are not as sensitive as before in the winter, if you don’t use the right lures or baits, they will hard to be attracted. As one of the best fishing lures of winter bass fishing, soft-plastic worms are used by many anglers. Fish can’t move quickly under the cold weather, so when you fishing with a lure, you must move your lures slowly. The Biggest advantage of soft-plastic worms is that they have no fast-moving parts. So you don’t have to pay much attention to slow down the lures’ movement.

Spoon lures

A spoon lure, in sport fishing, is an oblong, usually concave lure, usually made of metal or a shell, shaped like the bowl of a spoon. Many anglers like using spoon lures in winter because they can drop the lures right down into the school of bass, which means that fish don’t have to chase the lures. According to some experienced fishermen, the bass will often grab your spoon as it is falling.
If you want to use the spoon lures, the most important thing is to find a resident baitfish near your fishing spot. At the same time, you should also learn to drop or cast the spoon and watch your line as it falls. If you can’t drop the spoon lures at the right place, they will become useless.

Plastic grub lures

Plastic grub lures are classic winter bass fishing lures, they are simple and can be used by anglers of all skill levels. But nowadays, many anglers totally forget about them. But actually speaking, a grub can be one of the most effective bass lures for cold water. A 4-inch curly tail grub on a 1/4-ounce jig head can be all that is needed to catch the fish, they even don't require any complicated techniques.

Jerkbaits

Jerkbaits are lures that carry many of the characteristics of other bass lures. We usually divide them into 2 kinds: hard jerkbaits and soft jerkbaits.
Hard jerkbaits, often known as suspending jerkbaits, are long and slender lures that are fitted with a lip, and normally with either two or three treble hooks. They work well in clear water conditions when temperatures drop because they imitate dying baitfish. All you have to do is cast out a jerkbait, and then give it a few cranks of your reel so that it drops down to the right depth. From there, use a jerk and pause retrieve. When cold water bass fishing with jerkbaits, don't get too hasty or impatient. Take the time to experiment with the speed of your retrieve until you figure out what the fish will respond to.

Hair jig

Hair jigs work because they can be fished slowly in either deep or shallow water situations. They are one of the most versatile winter bass fishing lures you can have in your tackle box.

These fishing lures all have their own characteristics, and can work well in winter bass fishing. But different people have different fishing habits, you can choose the most suitable one from them. I believe right fishing lure can make your winter bass fishing trip becomes more interesting.

What Do You Know about Topwater Bass Fishing?

People who like bass fishing often regard the top water bass fishing as the most visual and powerful kind of fishing. This kind of fishing uses the top water fishing lures (which can float above the surface of the shallow water) to catch the fish.

 1. Why should we use the top water fishing lures?
A Topwater fishing lure is a type of fishing lure, usually floating, that may be moved about the surface of water and fish come up from underneath and do their best to give you a heart attack! That’s often because fish hitting a topwater are doing more than just picking up dinner, they’re trying to kill that bug, frog, rodent or fish that’s struggling on top.

2. The steps before topwater bass fishing
Check the weather: In my opinion, no matter what kind of outdoor activity you want to join, the first thing is checking the weather. And the weather condition can often affect the result of the fishing.
Choose the topwater fishing lures: This is the most important part, if you can’t choose an appropriate fishing lure, it will be hard to catch any fish. The most common topwater fishing lures are: Poppers, Buzzbaits and Surface lures. You can see many articles about how to choose the best topwater lures on the internet.

 3. The skills of topwater fishing
With more and more people develop an interest in topwater bass fishing, they begin to share their experiences with others, and we have summarized some useful tips for you.

1)Choose the appropriable time: Topwater fishing is best during the post-spawn, late spring season and into the fall months. After spawning, the fish are sluggish, starving and looking for food. In the summer time, the bass' metabolism has kicked into high gear and will provide a fun retrieval challenge. In autumn, the water temperatures are still warm enough to keep the bass biting.

2)Choose other suitable fishing tackles: Use high-quality fishing hooks on all of your baits. Chemically sharpened is the way to go. And remember that super fishing line and topwaters make an excellent team. These no stretch lines allow for easier hook sets, especially on long casts.

3)Know all kinds of fishing lures well: Learn to proficiently use all types of topwater lures. This will allow you to cover all of the bases when out on the water.

4)Shake your tail feather: Why fish can be attracted by the topwater lures? Because they look like alive. How to make your fishing lures look like alive? It depends on how people move them. Many topwater lures today come out of the package with tail feathers on them. The draw is that while your bait is sitting motionless on the surface, the feather or dressing is moving ever so slightly from the current in the water from wind and waves. It lets the fish know it’s alive.

5)Pay attention to the hook: One of the biggest challenges anglers face in top water fishing is the hook. The excitement of seeing the bass about to bite will cause many to jump the gun. Once you feel the bass on your line, take a deep breath and wait until you feel the pull of its weight. Snap your wrist to set the hook, and then reel your fish in!

Topwater bass fishing is not only fun but can yield decent catch numbers. Whether in a boat or onshore, top water fishing is both challenging and fun. I hope you can enjoy it.

When you want to fish a bass, the first thing you should do is learn more about the bass. Only when you know them well, you can catch more fish.
Bass is a name shared by many different species of fish. The term encompasses both freshwater and marine species, all belonging to the large order Perciformes, or perch-like fishes, and the word bass comes from Middle English bars, meaning "perch".
There are many types of fishing bass, like black basses, temperate basses, Asian seabasses. But when it comes to the bass fishing, we usually mean fish the largemouth bass. Largemouth basses have a very distinct appearance, they are olive green with dark strip in a jagged strip that is horizontal along each flank. They can live up to 16 years in the wild, reaching a maximum recorded length of 29.5 inches and a weight of 22 pounds. Their diet consists of bait fish, crawfish, frogs, insects, scuds, shrimp, small fish and snakes. They catch and eat prey that can be as large as 25 to 50% of their body length.

  • Fishing with spinnerbaits when you want to cover a lot of water and fish through quick cover.
  • Fish with topwater lures in very shallow water, or in areas that are covered in surface vegetation, such as lily pads.
  • Fishing with Jigs when you want a very accurate feel on the line, and are using short-range flipping and pitching techniques instead of casting out into the distance.
  • Fish with Plastic and Rubber Lure to imitate worms or lizards.

Fishing line
  • Match your line with the diving depth.
  • Choose lighter spinnerbaits for shallow water while heavier lures should be used for deeper depths.
  • Use a floating plastic/rubber lure, around 7 inches, with a light wire rig.

Fishing Rod
  • Employ a lightweight rod for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.
  • Employ a sensitive and lightweight rod for crankbaits and topwater lures.

  • Fishing for bass at the right time of Day--The best time to fish for bass is the first few early hours of the morning or the last few hours going into the evening.
  • Big baits catch big bass--Scientists have calculated the sizes of prey that bass consume. For narrow-bodied, soft-finned prey like shad or trout, bass may eat items up to half their own length. Wide-bodied, finny prey are selected at smaller sizes.
  •   Use red fishing hooks--Studies of bass vision indicate they detect red easily and can discriminate among shades.
