What Is Sport Fishing?

When it comes to fishing, we generally divide it into 2 parts: the sport fishing and the commercial fishing. We know that commercial fishing means people catch fish and other seafood for commercial profit, there are many people make their living by commercial fishing. Then, what is sport fishing? What do you know about it?

Sport fishing

Sport fishing also called recreational fishing, it is fishing for pleasure or competition. The most common form of sport fishing is done with a fishing rod, a fishing reel, fishing line, fishing hooks and fishing lures. Of course it has many other fishing tackles which we collectively call them the terminal tackles, for example, the sinkers, fishing float and fishing swivels.

It is hard to affirm the early evolution of sport fishing, but we can sure that the sport fishing took a great leap forward after the English Civil War, where a newly found interest in the activity left its mark on the many books and treatises that were written on the subject at the time. British fly-fishing continued to develop in the 19th century, with the emergence of fly fishing clubs, along with the appearance of several books on the subject of fly tying and fly fishing techniques, and this is start of the expansion period of sport fishing, and now, it becomes more and more popular all over the world.

If you want to experience the sport fishing, you should know the common game fish around ushere is a simple list:

  •      Big game fish are bony saltwater fish such as tuna, tarpon, and billfish (sailfish, marlin and swordfish).
  •    In North America, anglers fish also for common snook, redfish, salmon, trout, bass, pike, catfish, walleye and muskellunge. The smallest fish are called panfish, because they can fit in a normal cooking pan. Examples are crappies, perch, rock bass, bluegill and sunfish. Panfish are often hunted by younger anglers.
  •    In the United Kingdom, "game fish" refers to Salmonids (other than grayling) – that is, salmon, trout and char. Other freshwater fish are called coarse fish.
  •    Some popular game fish have been transported worldwide. Rainbow trout, for instance, can now be found nearly anywhere that the climate is appropriate, from their original home on the Pacific Coast of North America to the mountains of southern Africa.

In the past, sport fishers will always kill the fish they catch even they don’t eat them. But with the increase of the environmental protection consciousness of people, increasingly anglers practice catch and release to improve fish populations. Some game fish are also targeted commercially, particularly salmon.

As a popular game which has thousands of fans, sport fishing has it’s own conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) makes and oversees a set of voluntary guidelines. The local government will help to put these rules in place.

There is no doubt that the sport fishing is an attractive game. And with the development of the technology, I believe the fishing tackles will become more and more advanced, and the sport fishing will become more and more challenging and humanized.

How to Use a Fishing Swivel?

The details determine success or failure, and this rule can be applied to fishing. Sometimes people think that the details are not important at all when fishing, but these details may finally determine the result of your fishing trip. For example, many fishermen don’t care about the fishing swivel, but if you pay more attention to use it appropriately, you will get an unexpected result.

Many people may say that fishing swivel is just a small device consisting of two rings connected to a pivoting joint, it is not necessary to pay much attention to it. And some people even don’t know how to use it. Today, we will talk about how to use the fishing swivel.

1.How to choose a fishing swivel?
There are 2 kinds of common swivels: ball-bearing swivels & barrel swivels:
Barrel swivels are probably the most popular form due to their low cost and wide range of
sizes that cover seemingly all of the fishing needs. However, their biggest disadvantage is their inconsistency and inability to turn when put under tremendous pressure.

barrel swivels
Ball-bearing swivels contain polished stainless-steel ball bearings positioned between its spindle and body. This enables the swivel to rotate freely, negating any twist, even under heavy load. When you're targeting truly big game saltwater species with trolling applications, a stainless steel ball bearing swivel is the only way to go. The perceived disadvantage of ball-bearing swivels is their price.

And here is a skill for you to choose the size of the fishing swivel: Choose the smallest swivel possible for the species you are targeting. For example, if you are fishing for muskies, which are among the largest fish in freshwater, use a size 5 swivel.

2.How to tie a swivel to the fishing line?
After buying the appropriate fishing swivel, the next thing is putting it on the fishing line. I can tell you an easy way to tie the swivel to the fishing line, and it is called offshore swivel knot.
Form a loop at the end of the line and tie it off with a spider hitch knot. To make a spider hitch, double the line, form a loop and hold it with your thumb and forefinger. Wrap the doubled line around your thumb five or six times -- up to 15 times for braided line. Pass the loop through the eye of the swivel. Bring the end of the loop back past the eye of the swivel and hold it against the doubled line.

3.When should swivels be used and not used ?
Fishing swivels are not suitable for every condition, if you want to use a fishing swivel, you’d better know whether or not the swivel applies to your condition.
According to some experienced people, when using a casting lure that is prone to twist during the retrieve, or when trolling live/dead baits that are likely to twist, use fishing swivel can be helpful.
Swivels should not be used when fishing in still water, when the fish are aggressive, or as a direct connection to a hook or lure.

Fishing is easy if you only want to relax yourself and enjoy the holiday. But it is complicated if you want to learn it well, because there are too many details you have to care about. What I want to say is that no matter you want to relax yourself or catch more fish, pay attention to the details will help you more enjoy fishing.

What We Can Do with a Fishing Swivel?

Fishing swivel is a small device consisting of two rings connected to a pivoting joint. The device is usually made of metal, and the pivoting joint is usually ball or barrel shaped. The linkage in the center is what allows the line connected to the bottom ring of the swivel to move without impacting on the fishing line connected to the top ring of the swivel.                                             fishing swivels
Though people know the importance of the fishing swivel, they still have many questions. Today we will have a brief introduction to this simple fishing tackle.

1. Functions of fishing swivels
There are two main functions of fishing swivels, and that why more and more fishermen use swivels. First, swivels can provide a point between the main fishing line and the terminal tackle, and they are there to reduce the opportunity for your line to twist. The second function of fishing swivels is that they provide a link between two pieces of line simply. They can be used to join your mainline and leader together if you don't trust your line knotting skills or some types of swivels can be used to provide a link for an additional length of line to be connected for hooks or unorthodox sinker placements.

2. When to use a fishing swivels
Though fishing swivels can help fishermen a lot when fishing, it’s not suitable to be applied in all instances. As we all know, the biggest function of fishing swivels is to allow the line to untwist during line retrieval, preventing undesirable tangling. So situations in which line twists are a risk is when swivels should be used.

According to some experienced people, the primary situations when they use swivels are:
a.  When using a casting lure that is prone to twist during the retrieve
b. When trolling live/dead baits that are likely to twist

3. The types of fishing swivels
There are two main types of fishing swivels. The first is barrel/box swivels, and another is ball bearing swivels.

a. Barrel/box swivels
Barrel swivels are common for fishermen, because they are very cheap and simple to use. Their design is such that when pressure is exerted on the two rings and they are pulled apart the stoppers inside the barrel of the swivel press up against the base / top of the barrel.

b. Ball bearing swivels
Ball bearing swivels bring more technology to the table and make up for the deficiencies found in barrel swivels.  As the name suggests these swivels have ball bearings inside to minimize any friction and allow the swivel to twist freely when it is under pressure.

Generally speaking, different people have different opinion about the fishing swivels. Some people think swivels are useless when fishing, but others think swivels plays an important role in fishing. Why they have different opinions? In my view, it is just because they have different habits when fishing. As long as you can catch fish, which fishing tackles you use is not important at all.
