What Is Sport Fishing?

When it comes to fishing, we generally divide it into 2 parts: the sport fishing and the commercial fishing. We know that commercial fishing means people catch fish and other seafood for commercial profit, there are many people make their living by commercial fishing. Then, what is sport fishing? What do you know about it?

Sport fishing

Sport fishing also called recreational fishing, it is fishing for pleasure or competition. The most common form of sport fishing is done with a fishing rod, a fishing reel, fishing line, fishing hooks and fishing lures. Of course it has many other fishing tackles which we collectively call them the terminal tackles, for example, the sinkers, fishing float and fishing swivels.

Sport fishing tackles

It is hard to affirm the early evolution of sport fishing, but we can sure that the sport fishing took a great leap forward after the English Civil War, where a newly found interest in the activity left its mark on the many books and treatises that were written on the subject at the time. British fly-fishing continued to develop in the 19th century, with the emergence of fly fishing clubs, along with the appearance of several books on the subject of fly tying and fly fishing techniques, and this is start of the expansion period of sport fishing, and now, it becomes more and more popular all over the world.

If you want to experience the sport fishing, you should know the common game fish around us, here is a simple list:

  •      Big game fish are bony saltwater fish such as tuna, tarpon, and billfish (sailfish, marlin and swordfish).
  •    In North America, anglers fish also for common snook, redfish, salmon, trout, bass, pike, catfish, walleye and muskellunge. The smallest fish are called panfish, because they can fit in a normal cooking pan. Examples are crappies, perch, rock bass, bluegill and sunfish. Panfish are often hunted by younger anglers.
  •    In the United Kingdom, "game fish" refers to Salmonids (other than grayling) – that is, salmon, trout and char. Other freshwater fish are called coarse fish.
  •    Some popular game fish have been transported worldwide. Rainbow trout, for instance, can now be found nearly anywhere that the climate is appropriate, from their original home on the Pacific Coast of North America to the mountains of southern Africa.

In the past, sport fishers will always kill the fish they catch even they don’t eat them. But with the increase of the environmental protection consciousness of people, increasingly anglers practice catch and release to improve fish populations. Some game fish are also targeted commercially, particularly salmon.

As a popular game which has thousands of fans, sport fishing has it’s own conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) makes and oversees a set of voluntary guidelines. The local government will help to put these rules in place.

There is no doubt that the sport fishing is an attractive game. And with the development of the technology, I believe the fishing tackles will become more and more advanced, and the sport fishing will become more and more challenging and humanized.

How to Select a Fishing Float?

As we all know, fishing float (also called a bobber in the United States) is a fundamental accessory of fishing. Selecting the right float for the conditions will make the difference between a great day on the water or catching nothing at all. But select the right float is not an easy work, you have to pay attention to many details.

 1. The size of fishing float
“Diameter” is a word which people use frequently when they talk about the size of fishing float. If you want to select a suitable fishing float, diameter is a very important factor.
It is a common sense that the size of fishing floats should be determined by waves, wind strength, the depth of the water, shyness of fish, current, its size and type of bait use and required casting distance. Different diameters of floats are designed for different areas. If you select a wrong size, you may catch nothing in the end.
Experienced fishermen suggested that larger diameter floats have a tendency to be more stable in the current.

 2. The types of fishing float
People have divided the fishing floats into many types by their different shapes. And floats with different shapes are suitable for different conditions. For example, longer floats are better for fishing at deeper waters and shorter floats are better for shallower waters. Here are some common types of fishing floats.

a. Waggler floats
Waggler float is the term given to any float which is attached only at the bottom to the line. It is the most common fishing float nowadays. The waggler floats are very sensitive, and they are mainly use in 3 conditions:
   • Still water or slow to medium paced rivers
   • Turbulent water during windy conditions

   • Choppy lake waters with medium to large size waves

b. Stick floats
Stick Float is a straight float with a taper. It is always attached to the line both top and bottom. The advantage of using this float is that it can be immersed in the flow of the water against a tight line without the float submerging as the tide pulls on the trace. And people generally use it for river fishing.

c. Pole floats
Pole floats are made from wire, nylon, balsa or cane, and they are very small and do not require much weight to control stability. Pole floats come in a lot of different shapes and it’s important to know which one to choose. Here are the suitable fishing conditions for pole floats:
• River fishing (float with the widest part of the body at the top)
• Fishing in windy conditions on still waters (float with the widest part of the body at the bottom)
• Fishing deep and shallow lakes and canals
• When fish are shy (float with slim body as they will indicate the most delicate bites)

As we all know, we must fishing near the water, so we must avoid falling into the water. The spot we choose must have 2 features: the ground should be hard and the space should be enough. Besides, it will be better to choose a spot without high-tension line.

 4.  Can’t fish for a very long time
We should alternate work with rest when fishing. As we all know, we should sit there quietly and always keep our mind on the fishing float, so our body and eyes will be tired. We should have a rest every one or two hours. People who have disease should not fish for a very long time, it is harmful for their health.

 5.  Fishing at night should be more careful
Fish are more active at night, and many fish will foraging near the shore, so people prefer to fish at night because they can catch more fish. But our vision are blurred at night, we should take some illumination tools. At the same time, we should bring some insect-resist agents especially in the summer. Besides, the temperature is much low at night, we should bring a heavy jacket to keep warm.

 6.  Keep a healthy diet
People should have a healthy diet, especially when fishing outside. Fishing is an activity needs abundant energy, if you just eat some junk food, you will have no energy when fishing. You should also drink some hot water instead of cold water.  Keep a healthy diet is very important, and trust me, it will be troublesome once you have a stomachache in the wild.

Because there are so many factors can influence the result of your fishing, if you don’t care about these problems, it will be hard for you to catch more fish. Now, let’s see what will influence your fishing.

1. Human factors
As we all know, people should keep quiet when fishing, because once you scared the fish, they will stop eating the lures or baits in a short term. And sometimes, the owners of ponds have made a big noise before you go fishing, so the fish will be sensitive when you come, and it’s hard to get a bite on you line.

2. Don’t know when to set the hooks
Fishing float is an item of angling equipment that is attached to the fishing line.  A float serves as a visual bite indicator, it can help people choose the best time to set the fishing hooks. But for different fish, the float has different reaction, people should have a right judgment.

Fish are usually prefer to find a place to live and play together, and they will often go to this place. Only when people find such a place, they can catch fish directly. If you set the nests blindly, you may catch nothing.

Before casting the fishing line, people will set one or more nests to gather the fish together, the put the hooks in the nests. But many people can’t catch any fish in the nest, because the wind will blow the hooks to other place instead of the accurate location of the nests.

6. The change of climate
The suddenly change of climate will influence the temperature of water. And as we all know, the temperature of water will influence the actions of fish. If there is a big difference in water temperature, the fish may can’t adapt to the environment and stop foraging. So people should consider the weather condition before fishing.

The main material of fishing rod is bamboo in the past, but with the development of technology, the fishing rods are mainly made from fiberglass or carbon fiber. If you are a beginner, I suggest that you don’t need the best fishing rod, just pay more attention to choose the right size for yourself (the size depend on where you fishing) .

Common Fishing Tackles and the Use of Them

With more and more people get into fishing, traditional fishing tackles can’t meet the requirements of them, so many kinds of fishing tackles have been invented. But for normal fishing, all of these tackles can be divided into 5: fishing rod, fishing line, fishing float, fishing hook and fishing lure.

1.  Fishing rod
A fishing rod is a long, flexible rod used to catch fish. At its simplest, a fishing rod is a simple stick or pole attached to a line ending in a hook . Traditionally rods are made from bamboo, while contemporary rods are usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber. Fishing rods come in many sizes, actions, lengths and configurations depending on whether they are to be used for small, medium or large fish or in different fresh or salt water situations.

2.  Fishing line
A fishing line is a cord used or made for angling. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker lines are more visible to fish). Factors that may determine what line an angler chooses for a given fishing environment include breaking strength, knot strength, UV resistance, limpness, stretch, abrasion resistance, and visibility. Most modern lines are made from nylon or silk.

Fishing float is an item of angling equipment that is attached to the fishing line which serves several purposes. Firstly, it can suspend the bait at a predetermined depth; secondly, due to its buoyancy, it can carry the baited hook to otherwise inaccessible areas of water by allowing the float to drift in the prevailing current; and thirdly, a float also serves as a visual bite indicator. Fishing with a float is called float fishing.

Fishing hook is a device for catching fish either by impaling them in the mouth or, more rarely, by snagging the body of the fish. Fish hooks have been employed for centuries by fishermen to catch fresh and saltwater fish. In 2005, the fish hook was chosen by Forbes as one of the top twenty tools in the history of man. Fish hooks are normally attached to some form of line or lure device which connects the caught fish to the fisherman. There is an enormous variety of fish hooks in the world of fishing. Sizes, designs, shapes, and materials are all variable depending on the intended purpose of the fish hook.

Fishing lure is a type of artificial fishing bait which is designed to attract a fish's attention. The lure uses movement, vibration, flash and color to bait fish. Many lures are equipped with one or more hooks that are used to catch fish when they strike the lure. Some lures are placed to attract fish so a spear can be impaled into the fish or so the fish can be captured by hand. Most lures are attached to the end of a fishing line and have various styles of hooks attached to the body and are designed to elicit a strike resulting in a hook set.
