How to Catch Bass in Winter with Different Lures?

With the coming of winter, bass fishing becomes more and more difficult. A common problem for all bass fishing anglers is how to choose the right fishing lures. As we all know, fish are not as sensitive as before in the winter, if you don’t use the right lures or baits, they will hard to be attracted. Today, we will introduce some useful fishing lures to you.

Soft-plastic worms
Soft-plastic worms

As one of the best fishing lures of winter bass fishing, soft-plastic worms are used by many anglers. Fish can’t move quickly under the cold weather, so when you fishing with a lure, you must move your lures slowly. The Biggest advantage of soft-plastic worms is that they have no fast-moving parts. So you don’t have to pay much attention to slow down the lures’ movement.

Spoon lures
Spoon lures

A spoon lure, in sport fishing, is an oblong, usually concave lure, usually made of metal or a shell, shaped like the bowl of a spoon. Many anglers like using spoon lures in winter because they can drop the lures right down into the school of bass, which means that fish don’t have to chase the lures. According to some experienced fishermen, the bass will often grab your spoon as it is falling.
If you want to use the spoon lures, the most important thing is to find a resident baitfish near your fishing spot. At the same time, you should also learn to drop or cast the spoon and watch your line as it falls. If you can’t drop the spoon lures at the right place, they will become useless.

Plastic grub lures

Plastic grub lures are classic winter bass fishing lures, they are simple and can be used by anglers of all skill levels. But nowadays, many anglers totally forget about them. But actually speaking, a grub can be one of the most effective bass lures for cold water. A 4-inch curly tail grub on a 1/4-ounce jig head can be all that is needed to catch the fish, they even don't require any complicated techniques.

Jerkbaits
jerkbaits

Jerkbaits are lures that carry many of the characteristics of other bass lures. We usually divide them into 2 kinds: hard jerkbaits and soft jerkbaits.
Hard jerkbaits, often known as suspending jerkbaits, are long and slender lures that are fitted with a lip, and normally with either two or three treble hooks. They work well in clear water conditions when temperatures drop because they imitate dying baitfish. All you have to do is cast out a jerkbait, and then give it a few cranks of your reel so that it drops down to the right depth. From there, use a jerk and pause retrieve. When cold water bass fishing with jerkbaits, don't get too hasty or impatient. Take the time to experiment with the speed of your retrieve until you figure out what the fish will respond to.

Hair jig
Hair jig

Hair jig, what's one of the best winter fishing tips to remember? Always bring along a hair jig on your cold weather trips. Hair jigs work because they can be fished slowly in either deep or shallow water situations. They are one of the most versatile winter bass fishing lures you can have in your tackle box.

These fishing lures all have their own characteristics, and can work well in winter bass fishing. But different people have different fishing habits, you can choose the most suitable one from them. I believe right fishing lure can make your winter bass fishing trip becomes more interesting.

How to Choose Saltwater Spinning Rod and Reel?

For saltwater fishing, good fishing rod and reel are the foundations. If you use the appropriate fishing rod and reel, you will have a successful fishing. There are several kinds of fishing rod and reel in the market, such as the spinning rod and reel, the baitcasting rod and reel, jigging rod and reel…Today we will discuss how to choose the spinning rod and spinning reel for saltwater fishing.
spinning reel and rod

No matter what kind of fishing rod and reel you choose, you should take several things to consideration before, and it can help you make a decision as quickly as possible.

1. Different rods have different length, power and action. Before you buy the rod, you should know how different rods work. Longer rods cast farther, while shorter rods provide more power for fighting fish. Action is rated from "fast" for a rod that is stiff to "slow" for a rod that bends all the way to the handle. "Power" is the weight that the rod can lift from light to extra heavy. Rods are also categorized by the pound-test line or fishing lure weight that they are designed to work with.

2. The material of fishing rod is also an important factor when you want to buy the fishing rod. The fishing rods we usually see are mainly made out of graphite or fiberglass. If you want a fishing rod which is stiffer and more sensitive, you can choose a graphite rod. And if you think your rod should be tougher and more powerful, then the fiberglass fishing rod is more suitable for you.

3. When it comes to the fishing reel, we generally divide it into 2 types: high-speed fishing reel and low-speed fishing reel. But some fishing reels can switch from high-speed to low-speed with a push of button. High-speed fishing reel uses a gear ratio greater than 6:1, while the low-speed reel uses a ratio less than 4:1. High-speed reels can retrieve baits at breakneck speed, and low-speed reels can provide more power when fighting with the big fish.

Saltwater spinning rods are ideal for fishermen who are frequently casting and retrieving baits and lures. Finding a spinning rod with the right weight, action and ergonomics goes a long way toward increasing casting accuracy as you chase your next big catch.

Spinning rods are constructed from strong materials such as graphite and e-glass, but are designed to be lightweight to keep your arms from getting tired during all-day outings. They also have larger fishing line guides to reduce friction during casting. You can order spinning rods with fast action for more power and sensitivity, moderate action rods for longer distance casting, or slow action rods for trolling. A number of different power and weight options are also available.

Spinning reel

Saltwater spinning reels were once primarily the domain of small- and medium-game fishing, but recent innovations in metallurgy and design have made them a player in big-game fishing as well. Advances in drag systems, gearing and line capacities mean your spinner can win encounters with wahoo, amberjack, grouper, sailfish and other big game while still shining during the surf fishing and jigging they’re best known for.

Choose from low-speed reels for bass and redfish, high-speed reels for game fish, and even two-speed reels to rapidly recover slack line if a big fish makes a quick turn. Spinning reels can be found for using monofilament line, braided line or both, with varying length and test strength capacities.

How to Cast a Spinning Reel?

As one of the most popular fishing reels all over the world, spinning reels are easy to use and work extremely well, more and more people (especially the beginners) prefer to use the spinning reel instead of other fishing reels. Though the spinning reels re easy-operated, if you don’t know how to use it appropriately, you would catch nothing. Today, we will talk about how to cast the spinning reel correctly.
spinning reel

Before casting your spinning reels, you should do some preparatory work.

First, you should choose the right fishing line. The type of fishing line can determine the quality of your cast to some extent. If you are a beginner, you can choose the fishing line which can help you avoid the line twist. And if you are experienced, you’d better choose the fishing line which allows you to make much longer cast.

Secondly, you should learn how to hold your fishing rod correctly in advance. Many people always complain that they can’t cast the reels well, I think the most important reason is that they don’t know how to hold the fishing rod.
I can give you a way to hold the rod: hold the rod in your casting hand with your forefinger in front of the reel and your other fingers behind it. This gives you a better casting grip and leaves your forefinger free for the line as you cast so you can "trap" the line, by not letting it move easily, as you are casting to keep it from reeling out too far.

After doing the preparatory work, you can be ready for your cast. Here are the steps of casting the spinning reel. But we can only provide you the general steps, you can summarize some details by practicing.

Step 1: Reel in until your bait is 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) from the rod tip. If you have a sinker or bobber attached to the line, it should be 6 to 12 inches from the rod tip instead.
Step 2: Using your right index finger lay it over the line. It is not necessary to put a lot of tension on the line with your finger just enough to keep the fishing lure from falling when the reel is put into free spool mode.
Step 3: Open the reel bail. The bail is a loop of wire on the rotating rim outside and behind the reel spool. It gathers the line when you reel in and deposits it on the spool. Opening it moves it out of the way of the line so you can cast your lure.
Step 4: Pull the rod tip back so the tip sweeps over your dominant shoulder, and then bring it forward swiftly pointing the rod tip at your target. As the rod comes forward of your shoulder, release the line with your finger so the weight of the lure pulls line off the reel.
Step 5: Close the bail with your opposite hand and begin your retrieval. Note: To avoid line twist always use your hand to close the bail, do not use the handle to close the bail.

After knowing the basic steps, here are some little tips may be helpful for you.
1. It is important to face your target tip when casting a spinning rod. This will make it much easier to make an accurate cast and also avoid putting strain on your back while casting.
2. A common problem of using a spinning reel is that the line twisting. If you meet this problem, you can use a snap swivel at the end of the fishing line.

3. Practice makes perfect. Casting the spinning reel is a skilled work, you can learn it at an open space. If you practice enough at home, you will find you can cast you reel easily when fishing.

When to Fish Is Better? (2)

We have discussed last time that if you want to find an appropriate time to go fishing, you should take seasons and weather into consideration. [When to Fish Is Better?(1)Today we will talk about other factors you should know about choose the right time for fishing.
fishing

1. The temperature
Different to human and other warm-blooded animals, all fish are cold-blooded, they can't keep their body temperature at a constant level, so the temperature of the surroundings can easily affect the fish’s movement. When the water temperature is too high or too slow, the fish will move much slower. Beginners always complain that they can hardly any catch fish in the later morning- early afternoon of summer and in the winter, and obvious that the water temperature is the reason.

If you really want to fish when the water temperature is too high or too slow, you should choose the right fishing lures or baits to use, and you should also know how fast or slow to work them. Please remember one thing: when the water is cold, move your fishing tackles slower; and when the water is warm, you can move the tackles faster.

 2. The tides
If you want to have a trip of offshore fishing, you must know how tides affect the fishing, and how to catch more fish by the tides. According to the experienced people, it is best to fish when the tide is rising or falling, as this change causes prey to move en-mass, and thus makes a great time for coastal fish to feed. It will be much harder if you are fishing during the low or high tide, because less water movement, and then less coastal fish to feed.

You can search the time of low and high tides in your area on the internet, such as Google "tide chart", then you will know how to avoid the low and high tides. If you want to fishing during the low or high tide, here are some suggestions for you:

  •   Search a shallow spot when you fishing during the high tide.
  •   Search a mud bank near a slough (an area with a depression in the bottom) if you are fishing during a low tide.
3. The light
Fish are affected by light in many ways. When you go fishing, you must know how light affect the fish’s movements. There are several well-documented studies show that fish prefer early morning and evening sun to the bright sun of midday. Because the Morning sun warms the shallows, creating more comfortable water temperatures for fish to feed. Late morning is best when the sun has had more of a chance to warm the shallows. This is particularly true during early spring in shallows with dark or mud bottoms because dark areas absorb heat more rapidly than light sandy bottoms.

In the midday, especially in the summer, the light will make the water temperature becomes much higher, so the fish always move to cooler, deeper waters to stay comfortable. In these conditions, deep fishing baits, rigs and lures are best

Choose an appropriate fishing time is just the first step, but each step can determine the success or failure. Successful fishermen always pay attention to every detail, because they know only when they prepare enough, they can catch more fish.

When to Fish Is Better? (1)

Fishing at the appropriate time is crucial if you want to get a good result. Even you have the best fishing tackles and fishing spot, bad time will let them become useless. Experienced fishermen always know to fish at the right time. There are many factors should be taken into consideration if you want to find a better time.
fishing

1. The seasons
As we all know, different seasons should use different skills when fishing. When you want to have a trip of fishing, you’d better know some skills of how to fish in this season.

Spring – If you want to catch fish in the spring, you will have better luck later in the season, and later in the day, when things get a little warmer. Fish are biting off and on in the late morning and early afternoon because rays begin to penetrate the water and warm the water up.
And fish are eating a lot in the afternoon and early evening, because their metabolism and digestion are cranked. Water is warm because the sun is directly overhead.

Summer – This is a good season for fishing if you avoid the hottest times of the day. The fish will be biting well just before sunup and just after sundown when food is abundant.
In the late morning and early afternoon, fishing is poor for most of the day, because the fish move to deep water to cool off.

Fall – This can be an inconsistent time, but when the fishing is good, it is really good. They will likely not bite much in the morning and early afternoon. Toward the end of the day, however, the water will be warm from hours of sunlight, and the fish will be driven to eat more than usual because of the impending food shortage that winter brings. Dusk is therefore an excellent time for fishing.

Winter – For obvious reasons, not the best time for fishing. Unless you are ice fishing, which is a different thing entirely, you should leave your fishing rod in storage during this season.

2. The weather
When it comes to the weather, you should take several factors into consideration: the wind, storms and the rain. And these factors have different impacts for fishing.

The wind –Wind can play a large role in when to fish and your fishing success. Wind pushes surface water toward the far shore, and small prey fish with it, luring game fish. This makes windy days a good time for fishing.

The storm–Storms affect fishing success since fish are keenly attuned to changes in barometric conditions. With many fish, feeding increases during the hours immediately before a cold front, but slows during and after a storm or front hits.

The rain–For fishermen, rain can be your friend, but can also be your enemy. If the rain is light, especially a warm spring or summer rain, you can prepare to enjoy an excellent fishing trip. Because the light rain can blurs the water surface, making it harder for the fish to see you. It also washes lots of insects into the water, making it a prime time for fish to eat.
But if it is heavy rain, I suggest you not to go fishing. On the one hand, heavy rains may bring some potential risks for you. On the other hand, heavy rain muddies the water, makes it difficult for fish to find bait or fishing lures.

You also need pay attention to many other factors if you want to choose the right time, let’s talk about it next time.
