What Do You Know about Pond Fishing?

If you want to experience a successful and exciting fishing trip, you don’t have to go somewhere have large bodies of water. There is a great variety of underwater life swimming around in your local pond! Sunfish, Bass, Crappie, and Catfish are just a few of the commonly found fish residing in your local fishing hole. The same as lake fishing, pond fishing is also a popular style of freshwater fishing, and there are many skills and be applied to it. Today, we will have a brief introduction about pond fishing and its skills.
pond fishing

Pond fishing is the method of fishing in a body of water that has a photic zone throughout its entire width and length. We generally divide the ponds into 2 kinds: the privately owned and the publicly owned. So, before you go fishing, please make sure that the owners allow you to fish when the ponds are private. And when the ponds are public, you should follow creel limits set by local or state agencies. Then, let’s talk about the fishing skills.

   The fishing tackles
The fishing rod: As we all know, ponds come in all sizes but are generally small bodies of water, so you’d better use a fishing rod which is not longer than 6 feet. And the same time, you can choose a fast action, medium-light rod with a spinning reel, it will help you catch some small in the ponds.

The baits: When fishing in the ponds, we usually suggest you to use the live baits, especially the worms because they are attractive for fish in the ponds. If you want to use the artificial fishing lures, you can use the life-like miniature crickets, crawfish and minnows or plastic worms.

    Fishing time
Most fish in the ponds have siestas, so it is hard to catch any fish during the heat of the afternoon. The early morning or evening is usually the best time for pond fishing. Only when you choose an appropriate time, you are probably to get the result you want.

Fish in the bottom of water
Because ponds are generally shallow, the fish will often locate in the deepest water as a safe haven where they spend the majority of their time. If there is any structure in a pond, it will attract fish. Creek channels, road beds, weeds, grass, brush, rocks or timber are prime places to find fish in a pond.

    Use Temperature to Your Advantage
Fish like a specific type of water temperature because of the amount of oxygen in it, not to mention it’s what their body can tolerate. Fountains, streams and springs feeding into a pond can provide adjustable water temperatures that might be more appealing to specific fish.

Stay Hidden and Out of Sight
If you can see the fish then they can see you! In small bodies of water like a pond it’s not uncommon for fish to be able to see you. In fact, vibrations travel farther in small ponds and even if they can’t see you they can tell someone is near the edge of the water. Try to walk up quietly and stay out of sight, and use camouflage clothing that matches the local environment. You can find a wide selection of camouflage clothing on amazon for affordable prices.

Many people don’t like fishing in the ponds, because they think the ponds are small, and they can’t have a huge result. It is completely wrong, small ponds also have big fish as long as you use the right fishing skills. And if you are a beginner, the pond fishing is the most suitable style for you.

How to Choose Saltwater Spinning Rod and Reel?

For saltwater fishing, good fishing rod and reel are the foundations. If you use the appropriate fishing rod and reel, you will have a successful fishing. There are several kinds of fishing rod and reel in the market, such as the spinning rod and reel, the baitcasting rod and reel, jigging rod and reel…Today we will discuss how to choose the spinning rod and spinning reel for saltwater fishing.
spinning reel and rod

No matter what kind of fishing rod and reel you choose, you should take several things to consideration before, and it can help you make a decision as quickly as possible.

1. Different rods have different length, power and action. Before you buy the rod, you should know how different rods work. Longer rods cast farther, while shorter rods provide more power for fighting fish. Action is rated from "fast" for a rod that is stiff to "slow" for a rod that bends all the way to the handle. "Power" is the weight that the rod can lift from light to extra heavy. Rods are also categorized by the pound-test line or fishing lure weight that they are designed to work with.

2. The material of fishing rod is also an important factor when you want to buy the fishing rod. The fishing rods we usually see are mainly made out of graphite or fiberglass. If you want a fishing rod which is stiffer and more sensitive, you can choose a graphite rod. And if you think your rod should be tougher and more powerful, then the fiberglass fishing rod is more suitable for you.

3. When it comes to the fishing reel, we generally divide it into 2 types: high-speed fishing reel and low-speed fishing reel. But some fishing reels can switch from high-speed to low-speed with a push of button. High-speed fishing reel uses a gear ratio greater than 6:1, while the low-speed reel uses a ratio less than 4:1. High-speed reels can retrieve baits at breakneck speed, and low-speed reels can provide more power when fighting with the big fish.

Saltwater spinning rods are ideal for fishermen who are frequently casting and retrieving baits and lures. Finding a spinning rod with the right weight, action and ergonomics goes a long way toward increasing casting accuracy as you chase your next big catch.

Spinning rods are constructed from strong materials such as graphite and e-glass, but are designed to be lightweight to keep your arms from getting tired during all-day outings. They also have larger fishing line guides to reduce friction during casting. You can order spinning rods with fast action for more power and sensitivity, moderate action rods for longer distance casting, or slow action rods for trolling. A number of different power and weight options are also available.

Saltwater spinning reels were once primarily the domain of small- and medium-game fishing, but recent innovations in metallurgy and design have made them a player in big-game fishing as well. Advances in drag systems, gearing and line capacities mean your spinner can win encounters with wahoo, amberjack, grouper, sailfish and other big game while still shining during the surf fishing and jigging they’re best known for.

Choose from low-speed reels for bass and redfish, high-speed reels for game fish, and even two-speed reels to rapidly recover slack line if a big fish makes a quick turn. Spinning reels can be found for using monofilament line, braided line or both, with varying length and test strength capacities.

How to Cast a Spinning Reel?

As one of the most popular fishing reels all over the world, spinning reels are easy to use and work extremely well, more and more people (especially the beginners) prefer to use the spinning reel instead of other fishing reels. Though the spinning reels re easy-operated, if you don’t know how to use it appropriately, you would catch nothing. Today, we will talk about how to cast the spinning reel correctly.

Before casting your spinning reels, you should do some preparatory work.

First, you should choose the right fishing line. The type of fishing line can determine the quality of your cast to some extent. If you are a beginner, you can choose the fishing line which can help you avoid the line twist. And if you are experienced, you’d better choose the fishing line which allows you to make much longer cast.

Secondly, you should learn how to hold your fishing rod correctly in advance. Many people always complain that they can’t cast the reels well, I think the most important reason is that they don’t know how to hold the fishing rod.
I can give you a way to hold the rod: hold the rod in your casting hand with your forefinger in front of the reel and your other fingers behind it. This gives you a better casting grip and leaves your forefinger free for the line as you cast so you can "trap" the line, by not letting it move easily, as you are casting to keep it from reeling out too far.

After doing the preparatory work, you can be ready for your cast. Here are the steps of casting the spinning reel. But we can only provide you the general steps, you can summarize some details by practicing.

Step 1: Reel in until your bait is 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) from the rod tip. If you have a sinker or bobber attached to the line, it should be 6 to 12 inches from the rod tip instead.
Step 2: Using your right index finger lay it over the line. It is not necessary to put a lot of tension on the line with your finger just enough to keep the fishing lure from falling when the reel is put into free spool mode.
Step 3: Open the reel bail. The bail is a loop of wire on the rotating rim outside and behind the reel spool. It gathers the line when you reel in and deposits it on the spool. Opening it moves it out of the way of the line so you can cast your lure.
Step 4: Pull the rod tip back so the tip sweeps over your dominant shoulder, and then bring it forward swiftly pointing the rod tip at your target. As the rod comes forward of your shoulder, release the line with your finger so the weight of the lure pulls line off the reel.
Step 5: Close the bail with your opposite hand and begin your retrieval. Note: To avoid line twist always use your hand to close the bail, do not use the handle to close the bail.

After knowing the basic steps, here are some little tips may be helpful for you.
1. It is important to face your target tip when casting a spinning rod. This will make it much easier to make an accurate cast and also avoid putting strain on your back while casting.
2. A common problem of using a spinning reel is that the line twisting. If you meet this problem, you can use a snap swivel at the end of the fishing line.

3. Practice makes perfect. Casting the spinning reel is a skilled work, you can learn it at an open space. If you practice enough at home, you will find you can cast you reel easily when fishing.

How to Choose an Appropriate Spinning Reel?

For more and more fishermen especially the beginners, the spinning reel is a prior choice when fishing, because it is easy to use and very versatile. Spinning reels are ideal for light fishing line and live bait presentations where you need to cast either a very light fishing lure or don't want to harm live bait trying to get a little extra distance. Spinning reels are normally mounted below the rod; this positioning conforms to gravity, requiring no wrist strength to maintain the reel in position.

But there are all kinds of spinning reels in the market, and if you know nothing about how to choose a suitable spinning reel, you are easy to buy a useless one. When you want to select a spinning reel, you should take many details into consideration.

1. The body of a spinning reel
For different spinning reels, the materials of their bodies are different. They can be made of graphite or aluminum, or sometimes a combination of both. If you want to buy a spinning reel with high quality, you can choose one which has aluminum, it is much stronger. However, if your chosen playing field is saltwater, graphite is the way to go due to its corrosion-resistant qualities.

2. The size of spinning reel
When you come into a spinning reels store, you will find that the spinning reels have many sizes. It can often be a little difficult for people (especially the beginners) to choose a suitable one for themselves.
We usually think that the lighter the line you intend to use, the smaller the reel you should purchase. Spinning reels can handle line weights as low as 2-pound test, and can cast very light lures, when matched with the proper rod. Larger models, designed for bigger fresh and saltwater species can handle the heaviest weights of line.

3. The gear ratio
Many people don’t know what the gear ratio is, so they won’t take this point into consideration when choosing a spinning reel, but this is an important indicator. Gear ratio is the amount of times the bail rotates around the spool during one rotation of the handle. For example, a 4:1 gear ratio means the bail goes around four times during one rotation of the handle.
A high, low or medium speed retrieve should be determined by the style of fishing you intend to do. Generally speaking, high gear ratio reels are much better than low gear ratio reels for continuous casting and retrieving.

There are many other factors which can influence the quality of the spinning reel, such as the drag system of the reels, the amount of ball bearings, anti-reverse handles and so on. If you really want to choose a suitable spinning reel by yourself, you should study the basic knowledge carefully, and all your work will be paid off finally.
