How to Throw a Cast Net Easily?

If you have tried to fish with a cast net, you must know that the basic skill of net fishing is throwing the cast net. When people see someone throw the cast net in the video or in the real life, they may think that this work is very easy as long as you are strong enough. But actually speaking, throw a cast net is really hard if you are not experienced enough.

Though throw a cast net is difficult for beginners, you can keep the steps in your mind and practice it over and over again. Here are the steps:

Step 1:
Hold the yoke of the cast net in your left hand and hold the cast net up in the air, fully extended. Shake the net out and make sure the lead line around the bottom is not tangled or caught on itself. If this is not done the net will not throw correctly and will not open up completely.

Step 2:
Attach the loop of the hand line to your left wrist, and tighten it around your arm. It can help you getting you net back without any problems. Then pick up the hand line and create several 12 to 16 inch (30 to 40 cm) coils by looping it in your left hand. Remember, hold the cast net ring in a way such that the fingers are on top and the thumb is on the bottom.

Step 3:
With your right hand grab the net in the middle of the net about half way between the yoke and the lead line. If you've done this step correctly, one-half of the leaded weights should now be resting at the end of the net you have in your right hand.

Step 4:
Then holding onto the portion of the lead line into your palm, turn the palm down so that the cast net ring will hold it in place and the cast net will be ready to be thrown.

Step 5:
Now, take the cast net and turn it away from the point at which you'll cast the net. Stretch out the throwing arm and rotate it in a smooth and continuous motion to your target.

Step 6:
Rotate your upper body and throw. As the net opens up I am letting go with my left and first. I still have the net in my right hand but am holding it very loosely allowing the net to come out of my hand but still following through with my right arm helping the net to open. Open your mouth to release the lead line (if you are using your teeth).

These tips are suitable for beginners of net fishing. Experienced people generally have their own skills of throwing the cast net. Practice makes perfect, you will find the best way to throw the cast net one day.

 Net fishing

1. What is fishing net?
Fishing net is a device made from fibers woven in a grid-like structure. Some fishing nets are also called fish traps. Fishing nets are usually meshes formed by knotting a relatively thin thread. Early nets were woven from grasses and other fibrous plant material. Later cotton was used. Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon, although nets of organic polyamides such as wool or silk thread were common until recently and are still used.

There are various of fishing nets in the market, but the common types are:
  •   Hand Nets: These are similar to the nets you see children use at the beach for scooping up crabs or seashells. The net is held open by a large ring, and some are attached to handles for better leverage when quickly scooping fish out of the water.
  •  Lave Nets: These are a less common type of hand net. The net is much bigger and sits in the water until the fisherman feels a fish hit the mesh. Then, the fisherman slowly lifts the net out of the water with the fish inside.
  •  Cast Nets: Cast nets are wide, circular nets that have small weights attached to the edges (which allow the net to sink into the water). As the net is hauled back in, small fish will be caught.

2. How to fish with nets?
Fishing with nets is not an easy work. Compared with fishing with rods, it requires unique skills and quick reflexes. And that is why less people like net fishing. If you want to challenge yourself and learn how to fish with nets, you have to prepare yourself for it, because you may not get it right on your first few tries.
  • Step 1

Choose a net with appropriable size. The size of the fishing nets depends on where you want to fish and what kind of fish you want to catch. Remember that the holes of the net should be small, or the net will be damaged easily by the big fish.
  • Step 2

When you prepare your fishing net, you should find a suitable place and throw the cast net. There are a number of ways to throw a cast net and there is no right or wrong way. The ultimate goal is that you can throw the net, get it to fully open up and can get shade inside of it. It really doesn’t matter how you throw the net as long as these things happen.

As the old saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. Although the net fishing is hard, as long as you spend more time on practicing it, you will get a good result in the end.
