How to Use a Fishing Swivel?

The details determine success or failure, and this rule can be applied to fishing. Sometimes people think that the details are not important at all when fishing, but these details may finally determine the result of your fishing trip. For example, many fishermen don’t care about the fishing swivel, but if you pay more attention to use it appropriately, you will get an unexpected result.

fishing swivels
Many people may say that fishing swivel is just a small device consisting of two rings connected to a pivoting joint, it is not necessary to pay much attention to it. And some people even don’t know how to use it. Today, we will talk about how to use the fishing swivel.

1.How to choose a fishing swivel?
There are 2 kinds of common swivels: ball-bearing swivels & barrel swivels:
Barrel swivels are probably the most popular form due to their low cost and wide range of
sizes that cover seemingly all of the fishing needs. However, their biggest disadvantage is their inconsistency and inability to turn when put under tremendous pressure.

barrel swivels
Ball-bearing swivels contain polished stainless-steel ball bearings positioned between its spindle and body. This enables the swivel to rotate freely, negating any twist, even under heavy load. When you're targeting truly big game saltwater species with trolling applications, a stainless steel ball bearing swivel is the only way to go. The perceived disadvantage of ball-bearing swivels is their price.

And here is a skill for you to choose the size of the fishing swivel: Choose the smallest swivel possible for the species you are targeting. For example, if you are fishing for muskies, which are among the largest fish in freshwater, use a size 5 swivel.

2.How to tie a swivel to the fishing line?
After buying the appropriate fishing swivel, the next thing is putting it on the fishing line. I can tell you an easy way to tie the swivel to the fishing line, and it is called offshore swivel knot.
Form a loop at the end of the line and tie it off with a spider hitch knot. To make a spider hitch, double the line, form a loop and hold it with your thumb and forefinger. Wrap the doubled line around your thumb five or six times -- up to 15 times for braided line. Pass the loop through the eye of the swivel. Bring the end of the loop back past the eye of the swivel and hold it against the doubled line.

3.When should swivels be used and not used ?
Fishing swivels are not suitable for every condition, if you want to use a fishing swivel, you’d better know whether or not the swivel applies to your condition.
According to some experienced people, when using a casting lure that is prone to twist during the retrieve, or when trolling live/dead baits that are likely to twist, use fishing swivel can be helpful.
Swivels should not be used when fishing in still water, when the fish are aggressive, or as a direct connection to a hook or lure.

Fishing is easy if you only want to relax yourself and enjoy the holiday. But it is complicated if you want to learn it well, because there are too many details you have to care about. What I want to say is that no matter you want to relax yourself or catch more fish, pay attention to the details will help you more enjoy fishing.

How Does Lure’s Color Affect the Bass Fishing?

When we get into a fishing tackles store, we will see many kinds of fishing lures than you think. It is hard to count how many colors do they have, and it is impossible to buy all of them. But what exists is reasonable, what we should do is not know all the colors, but choose the most suitable color for ourselves.
fishing lures

In my opinion, though the colors are various, we can divide them into 5 classes: green, black, orange, white and brown. Now let’s analyze them one by one.
1. The green lures
Most green lures’ colors are close to the natural color, such as watermelon green and pumpkin green. Most jigs, bottom lures are usually green. Have you ever see the little fish which live in the aquatic plant? For most them, the body will be a little green. In fact, the color of a creature’s body will close to the color of the living environment.

2. The black lures
The black here means all the dark color. When people fish at night or in the cloudy day, they will prefer to use the black lures. Besides, black lures are also powerful when the water is muddy. It is because that the fish are always moveing toward the sun, the black lures look like the shadow, so they are more attractive to the fish, especially when the lures are topwater lures.

3. The orange lures
What do you think of when you see the orange lures? Well, I will think of crayfish, many people will use the crayfish as the bait when fishing, so we can see that orange lures are attractive to some fish. According to my experiences, the orange lures are very useful when you want to catch the bass.

4. The white lures
White lures include pink, yellow and fluorescent green, it is a good choice when you need the lures keep moving in the top of water. Because when white lures moving in the topwater, they look like alive, and the fish’s first reaction is to catch them, then you can have a bite in your line.

5. The brown lures
The lures which are going to attract the fish in the bottom water can be made in brown, such as artificial crayfish and worms.

Though it is important to choose the right color, but I have to say that the color is not the most important factor when choosing the fishing lures. Before deciding the color of the lures, you’d better pay more attention to the fishing lures’ action and size. If the action and the size are wrong, it will be hard to catch any fish even you choose a right color.

  •   The tackles of lure fishing are portable, and you don’t have to take actions to keep the live baits fresh;
  •   Fishing with lures can protect the environment;
  •   Lure fishing needs you keep moving, and you can have an exercise when fishing.

But there are many kinds of fishing lures in the market, they have different shapes, different sizes and different colors, how to find the most appropriate fishing lures? Experienced fishermen have already given us the answers.

1. The size
When you get into a fishing tackles store, you will find the sizes of the fishing lures are multifarious. If you don’t have a clear idea, you will like a headless chicken running with no direction. The sizes of fishing lures are usually depending on what kind of fish you want to catch. If the fish you catch is big, then the size of fishing lures should be large. And if the fish you catch is small, you should downsize your lures.

2. The color
When choosing the fishing lures, people always take the color into first consideration. As we all know, fishing lure is a type of artificial fishing bait which is designed to attract a fish's attention. The lure uses movement, vibration, flash and color to bait fish. If the color of the lure is not attractive enough for the fish, it will be hard to catch the fish.
  •  Choose the appropriate lure color is a kind of science, there are many little skills:
  •  Know the habit of the fish you want to catch. For example, how they see and eat.
  •  Green colors would work best in green waters and that blue lures would be effective in blue water. So you should consider the color of water when choose fishing lures.
  • The colors will be changed with the depth of the water. And bright colors will be drab for fish in deep water.
  •  In clear water, longer color wavelengths (like red) are visible in the shallows and shorter wavelengths (like blue) are visible in the depths.

3. Others
Plastic worms: They should be fished slowly, on or near the bottom, and can be made to swim or wiggle.

Jigs: Use the lightest jig you can as long as you can still feel when it hits the bottom.
                    Jigs
Crank baits: They can dive below the surface and wiggle like a fish, but hard to handle out of the water.

Lure fishing is a challenging activity, choose the appropriate fishing lures is just the first step. How to cast the fishing line and how to move the lures in the water are all important for you if you want to learn the lure fishing. But just believe yourself, as long as you learn it carefully, you will become powerful one day.

How to Remove the Fishing Hook from Your Skin?

When it comes to fishing hooks, people always think that they should be as sharp as possible, then the fish with be easily caught once they have a bite. But sharp hook is a double-edged sword, it can hurt the fish, but can also hurt people themselves. We can often see that people hurt by the fishing hooks. If you are a fishing lover, you should know how to remove the fishing hook from your skin and treating the wound.

1.Remove the fishing hook from your finger
Fingers are the easiest place to be hurt by the hooks when fishing. When you bait your hook or remove the fish from the hook, you must be careful enough, or the hook will be embedded to your fingers easily. Then, what should we do when the accidents happen? There are 2 ways:

 Method 1
  •  Tie off a loop with some fishing line. Place the loop over the hook’s shank and lightly pull it against the bend of the hook.
  •   With your other hands, press down and back on the hook’s eye.
  •   Continue pressing down on the hook’s eye. Quickly and firmly jerk the fishing line backward, ensuring that the line is parallel to the shank.                                                                         remove the fishing hooks

  Method 2
  •   Using pliers, advance the point of the hook (including the barb) out of the skin. Follow the natural curve of the hook.
  •   Use the pliers to cut the hook below the barb.
  •   Remove the hook by backing it out through the wound.                                                          remove the fishing hooks

2. Remove the fishing hook from your leg
  • Evaluate the wound site in the leg. Determine if the barb of the hook has penetrated beneath the surface of the skin, and if so, how deeply.
  • Wash the area around the wound with soap and water or other wound cleanser.  Apply a cube of ice to the area around the leg wound. Leave the ice on the skin only long enough for slight numbing to occur. Also wash your hands thoroughly--you might consider wearing sterile medical gloves.
  • To remove a hook that has not penetrated the skin past the barb, gently pull the point of the hook straight out of the leg until it is removed.
  • Hold the shank, or long section, of the hook and turn the point gradually toward the surface of the skin and push slightly to guide it out. Clip off the hook behind the barb with wire cutters. Pull the now barb-less hook out following the original route of entry.

3. The follow-up work

After removing the fishing hook from your finger or leg, what you should do next is washing the wound site, apply antibiotic ointment and dress with a Band-Aid or absorbent pad and tape. You should make sure that the wound won’t become infected.

How to Bait a Fishing Hook?

For people who like fishing, they all know that bait a fishing hook correctly is very important. If you bait your fishing hooks in an inappropriate way, the fish will refuse to have a bite and keep away from the hooks.
 bait a fishing hook

In my opinion, we should remember 2 points when bait a fishing hook. First, we should make the fishing baits or fishing lures look like they are alive, then the fish will be attracted by them. Then, you should bait your hooks tightly, or your baits will be eaten by the fish easily. But many people may ask me, how can I bait a hook tightly and make them look like alive? Don’t worry, I will tell you some little tips.

1.The hooks
As we all know, the hooks must be sharp when fishing, it is very hard to catch a fish if your fishing hooks are blunt. Then how to judge whether the hooks are sharp or not? The hook should be so sharp that it nicks you or gets caught on clothing very easily, if not it's time for a change of hook!
Then, you should also pay attention to the size and the color of the fishing hook. And this depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. For example, some fish like red hooks while some like silver hooks.

2.The artificial baits (fishing lure)
Buy fishing lures for the right depth. You can find artificial lures that sink, float, or stay just under the surface. In addition to customizing for your fish's habits, you can find artificial bait intended to attract a specific species by smell or appearance.
In order to hook a standard artificial "grub," thread the hook through the mouth of the bait until the front reaches the eye of the hook. Push the end of the hook out through the grub's stomach.

3.The live baits
Fresh baits can usually help people catch more fish, and different baits are suitable for different ways.

Worms
  • Pierce through several smaller worms or cut up worm halves to hide the hook in a mass of wriggling worms. Some hooks come with smaller hooks attached to the side for this purpose.
  • For large worms, thread a single worm along the hook until the hook is mostly or completely hidden.
  • For very large worms, pierce the hook through several points of the body. Leave a length at the end to wriggle and attract fish.

Shrimp (prawn)
Shrimps should be put on the hook tail end first and so the body of the shrimp curls up into the shape of the hook. Most people bait shrimp the other way (head first) but this will cause the shrimp to fall off more easily.

Octopus
Octopus should be baited using the tentacles foremost so they cover the hook. As with the prawn the octopus should thread over the hook to disguise it.

Practice makes perfect, as long as you often do it, you will know how to bait a fishing hook with different baits clearly.
