Fly fishing, an angling method which was originated from Europe and America, and it is very popular all over the world now. This kind of fishing use an artificial "fly" to catch fish, and the “fly” is cast using a fishing rod, reel, and specialized weighted fishing line, so many people think fly fishing is a type of lure fishing.
Many people are attracted by the fly fishing and want to learn it. But as the old saying goes, “Know yourself and know your enemy, you will win every war”. Before go fishing, you should know some basic knowledge about fly fishing.
1. The tackles of fly fishing
Fly rods: selecting a fly fishing rod is not difficult. Though there are literally thousands of choices, there are three things you will need to know: the rod “weight” , the rod length, and the action of the rod.
Fly reels: the most important function of the reel is holding your fly line. If you are fishing for larger species of fish, then the fly reel becomes more important. When you choose a fly reel, you should make sure that it can match the weight of the rod you purchase, and it will allow for enough room for backing and the fly line itself.
Fly line: As we all know, the line is the most important tools of your fly fishing gears. A good quality line will cast well on both an expensive or cheap rod. But remember, the weight of the line corresponds with the weight of the rod and reel.
Flies: fly fishing is angling method which use artificial “fly” to attract the fish and catch them, so the artificial “flies” (or we can call them “fishing lures”)are also important. We usually divide flies into 3 types: dry flies, nymphs and streamers. If you don’t know how to choose, you can ask the boss of the local fly shop.
Leader and tippet: The leader and tippet is what connects from the end of the fly line to your fly. The necessity for the two parts is to enable you to cast and have your line straighten out by transferring the energy through the fly line and down to the fly.
2. How to cast the fly rod
In my opinion, the most attractive place of fly fishing is casting the fly rod, the track of the fishing line is graceful. But casting a fly fishing rod is not a very difficult thing if you learn it right the first time. The specific steps are:
1) Load your fly rod
2) Grip the rod like you are shaking someone’s hand.
3) Start your back cast.
4) Pause when your fly line fully leaves the surface.
5) Finish with your forward cast.
6) Stop your hand abruptly with the tip of the fly rod still slightly pointing upward.
Finally, please be careful when you cast the fly fishing rod, because the hooks in the artificial flies may hurt people nearby.
