Winter is not a good season for fishing. On the one hand, the fish in the winter is not easy to catch, because they are less sensitive to the fishing lures or the baits. On the other hand, the cold weather is really a big challenge for people. But for many fishing lovers, these problems can’t stop their footstep. And they even summarized some useful skills for winter fishing.
1. Select a right time
Many people always take their fishing tackles and go fishing happily when they are free, but they hardly take the weather into consideration before fishing. As we all know, fishing outside is not an easy work if the temperature is very low, even you wear enough clothes. Besides, the fish are not easy to catch in a very cold day. According to some experienced fishermen, the best fish-catching times are typically between 10 am and 4 pm in the winter.
2. Prepare the equipment you need
Different to fishing in warm day, you should take more equipment when fishing in the winter. First of all, you should check all the fishing tackles you need before fishing. Then, you should bring some things to keep warm, such as heave coat, gloves, waterproof and insulated boots, hat, hot water and hot food. The body is the revolution capital, you should put your health first.
3. Pay more attention to the baits
In the winter, the fish are going to be lazy, and ordinary baits or lures are not attractive enough for them. Your baits/lures should satisfy following requirements:
- The baits/lures should be as large as possible. Focus on large, slow-moving baits/lures that attract the particular fish you’re going for. Bass and crappie are the more popular choices for winter fishing, and catfish is always a favorite!
- Keep you baits warm. The temperature of water is low in the winter, so the fish want to eat something alive instead of some ice baits/lures. You’d better warm the baits before casting.
- Try to make your fishing baits/lures more colorful in the winter. Because fish are less sensitive to the food in the winter, colorful baits/lures can be easy to be found in the water.
4. Choose a suitable spot
When you have prepared your equipment, the next thing you need do is choosing a suitable spot. Experienced fishermen always choose the old spot to fishing, because they are not sure whether the new spot has fish or not. And in my opinion, you’d better choose a spot where can against the cold wind. The wind in the winter is always strong, if you sit in an open field, you can’t keep on for a long time.
5. Try to be patient
Fishing in the winter is much harder than before. Many people will go back if they haven’t had a bite after a few hours. But please be patient and try to find the reasons. Fishing is a leisure activity, just regard it as a vacation, and finally you may get a good result.
