Freshwater fishing is when a fisherman fishes in a body of water that has less than 0.05% salinity, and it is very common in our daily life. There are many differences between saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing, because the species of fish are entirely different. So, the skills of freshwater fishing are different from saltwater fishing.

1. Different style of freshwater fishing
As we all know, freshwater are exist in many places, the ponds, the lakes, the streams and the rivers, they can be both man-made and naturally occurring. Then, the skills of fishing are the same in different places? Well, of course not.

Ponds fishing: Many people think the simplest form of freshwater fishing is pond fishing. It doesn’t need many skills, and only requires some basic things - a cheap rod and reel, some earthworms, and a bobber. The fish in the ponds are easy to catch, If you want to teach the kids to fish, pond fishing is a great choice.

Lake fishing: This is the most popular forms of freshwater fishing. Compared with pond fishing, the fish in the lake contains more species such as the largemouth bass. And the equipment of lake fishing should be better, and you also need the fishing lures. If you have a boat, the lake fishing can be more interesting.

Stream fishing: Stream fishing is usually suitable for someone who wants to catch the trout. As we all know, the trout are wily and wary, and this is the main reason why people go fishing in the stream. There are other fish to be found in many streams, with catfish being one of the most popular non-trout species.

River fishing: Rivers can vary tremendously in size and the fish species they contain. One of the unique fishing opportunities they can offer are runs of spawning fish that only occur during a short period of time during each year.

2. Find the best spot for freshwater fishing
If you plan to have a trip of freshwater fishing, try to find a fishing spot is very important. You can take 4 factors into consideration when you want to find a fishing spot:

  Structure: Structure refers to changes in the shape of the bottom of lakes,rivers, or ponds, caused by rocks, drowned trees, manmade cribs, flooded roadbeds, humps, ledges, and drop-offs. Many fish species live near structure, Lakes and ponds may have shoreline structures such as docks, logs that provide shelter, shade, and protection for fish.

  Salinity and oxygen: Some fish can’t live with much salt in water (like brook trout), but some fish can both live in the salt and fresh water (like striped bass). And different fish species have different requirement for the oxygen in the water. You need learn some basic knowledge about the habits of different fish.

  Temperature: Each fish species has a specific range of water temperature that it enjoys. If you know it, you will know when to try for specific kinds of fish.

  Food: The amount and type of food available in a body of water plays an important role in determining which types of fish you can hope to catch. The currents and water depth are also significant factors. Scrappy sunfish will haunt shallow riffles while lake trout favor the dark, cold depths. Bass will slam baits on the surface, while carp feed heavily on the bottom.
