Fishing Tackle: How to Teach Your Kids to Fish?

Taking your kids fishing is a great experience for families, especially when you are a fishing lover. But a good fisherman may not be a good teacher, improper methods may let your kids lost the interest in fishing forever. Compared with teaching an adult, you need more skills in teaching a kid to fish.

1. Lead your kids to be interested in fishing

For kids, it is very hard to force them to do something that they are not interested in. So, if you want to teach your kids to fish, the first step is let them know the joy of fishing. You can let them watch some interesting videos or read some funny stories about fishing at home. And when you can also let them see how you fish. Only when they think that fishing is interesting, they are willing to listen to the basic knowledge about fishing.

2. Help them know the fishing tackles

When your kids are interested in fishing, they must ask you to take them to fish, and you’ll need to introduce them to the fishing tackles. You can show them all the basic fishing tackles at first, and then tell them the different purpose of these tackles. (If your child is very young, use a child’s fishing rod with a plastic hook until they’re ready to graduate to the real thing.)

3. Find a good fishing spot

Choosing a suitable fishing spot is very important, and you have to take 2 points into consideration. First, you must make sure that you can catch fish in this location, or the kids will get bored soon with no fish. Secondly, remember to choose several suitable spots, and then ask your children’s opinion, kids always have their own ideas.

4. Teach them how to avoid the dangers

Fishing can be dangerous sometimes, especially for kids. You can’t prevent the kids all the time, so you’d better tell the children all the potential risks you know when fishing and how to avoid them. First, you should tell them not to play the water near the ponds or lakes, it is very dangerous. Then, you should tell them the danger of the fishing hooks (no matter which kind of fishing hooks they use). And there are many other risks in fishing, you can tell them one by one when fishing.

5. Tell them how to fish

Finally, what you should do is teach your children how to fish. You should show them how to bait a hook, how to cast, how to watch the fishing float and remove the hook. And once they cast the fishing line, you need teach them the importance of patience when fishing.

Teach a kid to fish is not an easy thing, because they are hard to focus on one thing for a long period. As parents, what you need is enough patience. If you are too serious, your kids may not go with you next time.
